Welcome to Loudoun Gowf Club, ‘a unique and historic golf club’ and the only ‘Gowf Club’ in the world.

The first question usually asked about Loudoun Gowf Club is why is it known as a “Gowf Club”, and not a ‘Golf Club’?

Gowf is in fact the ancient Scottish word for golf, and Loudoun is unique in being the only ‘Gowf Club’ in the world. Golf, or gowf, has its historical roots in Scotland with the earliest written record of the game dating back to 1457 and more specifically there are historical references to gowf being played at Loudoun dating back some 400 years with written accounts of ‘The Gowf Field of Loudoun’, as it was originally known. Gowf at this time was a relatively inexpensive sport to play, making it accessible to people of all social classes. and we are rightly proud of being ‘a custodian of these original Scottish golfing values and traditions’. The use of the term ‘Gowf’ has been enshrined by the club, and its members, since the first ball, in ‘modern times’, was struck by the Duchess of Loudoun on the 20th February 1909.
