Hole 1 is a challenge even for the strongest golfers. The tee box is elevated, and the first shot is for a dramatic uphill fairway. The tee shot for men must be well over 200 yards to have a chance to reach the green. Women play the hole as a par 5, so they may play up to the right before approaching the green.
The approach shot is even steeper than the tee shot. The player must shoot well uphill to a then elevated green. The only benefit is that missing long is generally fine, considering the slope behind the green continues steeply beyond the hole.
Once on the green, the putts should be fairly straightforward. The hole is incredibly challenging, and the average golfer should be happy to walk away from this hole with bogey.
