Hole 16 Discussion

The 16th is a masterpiece of a golf hole, featuring a blind tee shot, and an unbelievably intense green. The tee shot plays to the top of a hill, sloping away on all sides. The hole is a slight dogleg left, so the line of play is nuanced. The line straight over the hill is delineated by a patch of blue sky, visible between the oak trees in the distance. This line, however, may not be ideal depending if players want to risk trying to kick left on the back side of the hill.

This is complicated by a red-staked ravine, along the left side of the fairway, that can easily capture shots played too aggressively left. Beyond the hill, there is eventually out-of-bounds which can be trouble for longer hitters playing too aggressively over the center. Unfortunately, the subtle ideal angle here requires experience.

Once on the back side of the hill, the approach shot plays over a creek into a strikingly steep green. To complicate things, the shot will typically also have a downhill lie. The green has one bunker left, and a massive bunker along the lower-right side. Any backspin on this shot could spell disaster, given how sharply the green slopes back-to-front.

The slope of the green is extreme. There are three or four distinct tiers, all with extreme back-to-front pitch. Playing to the correct tier is absolutely essential. The drop-off between the front tier and the rest of the hole seems almost vertical. Anyone out of position here is in serious trouble.
